Insulating Our Pig Barn

We had a free day, so instead of finishing one of the other projects we have going on, we decided to start a different one instead! 😂 We insulated our 105 year old barn we use for the pigs & created a removable wall to separate it into 2 stalls when needed.

What we used:

First, we started by removing and cleaning the entire barn. That meant that I needed to much all the pig manure and remove the stahl matts. Then we needed to remove and unwanted pieces of wood so there would be a flush surface to screw the plywood up to the studs of the barn.

Next, we needed to cut insulation to length and place it in-between studs. The insulation we got was the most affordable we could find, but we probably should have used a hard foam to keep out the moisture better.

After the Insulation was cut to length it was time to cut plywood and start screwing it into the studs. The plywood was what will hold the insulation in-between the outside siding and the inside plywood.

We additionally added a middle divider down the center of the barn so we could separate two different farrowing sows at the same time. In addition to the center divider we also created a corner piglet safe zone and then an 8 inch high piglet safety zone around the entire perimeter of both farrowing sides. Pig sows are notoriously know for laying on piglets and this is designed to reduce that possibility giving the piglets a place to escape. It has really worked well!
